Columbus crowned a pair of champions at the Hudson Invitational. Leading the way for the Sailors were Carson Hartz at 170, and Max Magayna at 152. Max Magayna kept his undefeated freshman campaign intact, adding a pair of pins in route to the championship at 152 pounds. Carson Hartz survived a scare in the semifinals, overcoming a two point deficit with 10 seconds remaining in the match to punch his ticket to the finals. In the finals he secured the pin to earn the championship at 170 pounds.

Carson wrestled three complete matches today, using every second in his semifinals matchup. “In the semis, I just kept thinking that the match wasn’t over. There was still a lot of time, and two points isn’t a lot. If I just flurried at the end I could still come out with a victory. I just stood up right away, I was really explosive. I got into a scrambling position and put him on to his back, and that was all I needed. Going into that finals match, I felt that I was better prepared for that match then I have been for any other match this season. I thought that I was just really focused, and was able to come out with a second period pin.”

Freshman Mason Knipp improved his record to 13-2 on the season. Mason once again found himself in the finals, this time against a familiar foe. #1 ranked Matthew Francis of West Hancock. Mason attempted to avenge his only loss on the year. Ultimately he was unable to come away with the victory, but was still happy with his day overall. “I had a pretty alright day. I was able to win my first match pretty easily. In the finals I lost to the same guy that I did last time. I think I did better this time, I was able to score on him so I think overall I did pretty good.” He has taken to his first high school season well, “my first season has gone pretty good. I had a late start to the season with some injuries so I had to get over that. But other than that I think the season has been going good. I need to work harder in practice and have a better attitude, and just continue to work on getting better every day.”

Senior Sam Hackett reached the finals at yet another tournament. He faced top seed Karter Krapfl of Hudson. It was an extremely close match from start to finish, and at the end of regulation the score was still tied up at two all. This match would come down to ultimate tie breaker, ride outs. Sam chose the top position in the ride outs, but with three seconds remaining gave up an escape which sealed the match.

Gavin Reed suffered an upset in the second round today, but battled through the consolation side of the bracket and bounced back to secure a third place finish. Connor Knudtson also battled through a pretty tough bracket, and earned a 4th place finish on the day.
