At last year’s sectionals tournament, the Columbus wrestling team advanced multiple wrestlers to districts for the first time in a number of years, but they felt there was some things left on the table to build on. For this year’s tournament, 5 Sailors are advancing to next week’s district tournament at BGM. Max Magayna led the way once again for the Sailors, earning the sectionals championship at 152 pounds. Gavin Reed at 113, Sam Hackett at 138, Carson Hartz at 170, and Mason Knipp at 195 were all advancing as well with second place finishes. Mason Burr, Joseph Kwofie, and Connor Knudtson narrowly missed out on advancing with third place finishes.
“Last year we moved three guys on to the next round, I thought that was a great starting point, this year we were able to send a couple more. All the credit goes to those guys and the work they have been putting in all year,” said head coach Denny Boleyn. “The biggest improvement we have made this year is on our confidence. Guys have seen that the hard work has been paying off throughout the season. They feel like they can battle with anyone, and are looking forward to the opportunity to go out and compete with the best of the best. I was happy that we put 5 guys through, but we only had one champ. We definitely have some things to clean up and work on. We will get back to work on Monday with some film review to identify those mistake and get them corrected for next week.”
At 152 pounds, Max Magayna cruised to two first period falls on the way to the sectionals championship. The championship bout against Gunnar Keeney was over in 28 seconds.
A battle of ranked wrestlers in the 113 pound championship. #10 Gavin Reed took on #9 Andrew Kimball, and was unfortunately unable to defeat the former SMC wrestler, finishing the day in 2nd place.
A rematch of the championship bout at the Hudson Invitational at 138 pounds as Sam Hackett took on Karter Krapfl of Hudson. The previous meeting was a sudden victory overtime win for the Hudson wrestler, and he would take this matchup as well. Sam moves on to districts with a second place finish.
Carson Hartz would take on top ranked Cade Tenold of Don Bosco in the championship at 170 pounds. The Cade’s heavily bandaged hand was able to hold up, and he would ultimately take this match. Carson advances to districts with a second place finish.
At 195 pounds, freshman Mason Knipp would take on #5 ranked Cedric Yoder of Don Bosco in the championship bout. A late takedown as time expired was not enough, and the Bosco wrestler takes a 1 point decision. Mason advances to districts with a 2nd place finish.
