In Iowa, wrestling takes precedent over weather every time. A Friday snowstorm was enough to cancel the JV tournament on the schedule for Saturday, but the Varsity tournament in Hudson was still a go. A partial Sailor lineup was in the field for the Hudson Invitational and as a team the Sailors took 5th place. Out of the 6 wrestlers that competed, the Sailors put 4 in the finals, crowning 2 as champions. With numerous solid teams including, #1 Don Bosco, #6 Nashua Plainfield, #10 West Hancock, and sectional opponent and host Hudson in attendance, the Sailors were ready to go and were up for the challenge.
At 113 pounds Mason Burr picked up a couple of wins at his new weight class. In his semi finals matchup he was in a tight contest when he took his opponent from feet to back to lock up the pin. In the finals he would match up with Cole Frost of Don Bosco. It was a back and forth match, Burr would go out of bounds trailing by 2 points with three seconds left. On the restart, Burr hit a throw to secure a takedown as time was expiring to force overtime. He would go on to lose in sudden victory in the overtime period and finish the day in second place.
At 120 pounds Gavin Reed found himself facing some familiar foes. First up in the semi finals matchup he would battle with last years sectional and district opponent and former Sailor Mat Club wrestler Andrew Kimball of Don Bosco. Last year Kimball got the better of Gavin in the post season, but this time around Gavin was dominant. Gavin controlled the match from start to finish earning a 7-0 decision. In the finals, Gavin would once again meet up with #2 ranked Garret Rinken from Nashua. Rinken would take the finals matchup by major decision 8-0. .
At 160 pounds, Max Magayna dusted himself off from the midweek loss in Thursdays dual and came back with a vengeance. Max would open up the offense on his feet today, varying up the offensive attacks while still pinning his way through the field. In the finals, Max would meet #10 ranked Kane Zuehl of West Hancock. Max continued to work on his takedowns, getting three in the first period before pinning his opponent for the first place finish.
` At 195 pounds Mason Knipp would also pin his way through the field to set up a finals matchup with #8 Kale Zuehl of West Hancock. After a scoreless first two periods, Mason would earn the escape to open the third period. He would later get a takedown with 30 seconds remaining and would ride his opponent out to lock up a first place finish.
At 220 pounds Connor Knudtson would battle through the consolation side of the bracket after losing a semi finals matchup to find himself in the third place match with Landon Pratt of Nashua Plainfield. Connor was the aggressor for most of the match, firing off shots at will. He would eventually turn his opponent getting a second period fall, coming all the way back for a third place finish.
The Sailors are back in action Thursday, January 2oth for the final home dual of the season.
