It was a bitterly frigid night for a road trip, but the Columbus wrestlers were on fire on the mat for the first competition date of the new year. After an extended Christmas break the Sailors came into 2022 refreshed and ready to go. In a pair of duals against Sumner Fredericksburg and Aplington Parkersburg the varsity lineup went 11-3 on the evening in contested matches. The Sailors would split the evening’s team duals, defeating Aplington Parkersburg before falling to Sumner Fredericksburg.
In the opening dual of the evening, the Sailors won every match they contested, taking out the Falcons of AP 40-30. Mason Burr turned in an impressive performance at 120 pounds, using relentless attacks and smart match awareness to build a lead into the third period before eventually securing the fall. Carson Hartz extended his winning streak at 182 pounds, continually pressuring his opponent and locking up a first period fall.
In the second dual of the evening, the marquee matchup was at 220 pounds. Mason Knipp, who has recently fallen out of the rankings would take on the #9 ranked wrestler at 195 pounds in 1A. Both wrestlers typically wrestle at 195 pounds, but for this matchup, the match would take place at 220 pounds. In a back and forth match Mason would ride his opponent out in the second period without giving up any points. In the third period Mason was in some trouble giving up a takedown with only 30 seconds to go, but he would use a late reversal and near fall points to win the match in a 12-8 decision.
The Sailor wrestlers will be back in action on Saturday, January 8th with a varsity and JV tournament at the Tripoli Invitational.
